Biography
Head of the Data Science for Industry and Physics (DSIP) Unit at the Digital Industry Center of the Fondazione Bruno Kessler (FBK)
Marco Cristoforetti is Head of the Data Science for Industry and Physics (DSIP) Unit at the Digital Industry Center of the Fondazione Bruno Kessler (FBK) in Trento, where he leads research on artificial intelligence and data science techniques applied to the analysis and forecasting of time series.
With a background in theoretical physics and a PhD in computational physics, he focuses on developing advanced predictive models—particularly using machine learning and deep learning—to understand complex dynamics in temporal and spatial data.
He applies these methodologies across several high-impact domains relevant to sustainability, industry, and science, including:
- Industry 4.0, through models for predictive maintenance and condition monitoring of machinery and industrial plants, as well as for the forecasting of energy demand in support of the planning and management of energy generation and distribution systems.
- Meteorology and climate science, developing AI-based techniques for forecasts ranging from radar-based precipitation nowcasting to the generation of regional climate scenarios through AI-driven downscaling models.
- Space physics and complex systems, with contributions that connect AI techniques to the study of ionospheric anomalies as well as to fundamental physics research conducted at large-scale particle accelerators such as those at CERN.
His publications include work on time-series forecasting models, deep learning pipelines for diagnosis and prognosis of industrial machinery, and generative models for meteorological nowcasting.
Cristoforetti is involved in international collaborations within European and national projects on AI, digital transformation, and sustainable energy, with a strong commitment to bridging data science, technological innovation, and climate-relevant impacts in support of the ecological transition.
