According to the report "Towards the Circular Economy" (2012) from the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, only in the European Union it is possible to save USD 630 billion in materials by adopting advanced principles of circular economy.

Digital technologies can clearly favor and accelerate its development.

The traceability of individual products throughout the whole life cycle, by the utilization of networked sensors and the processing of data supported by Simulations and Artificial Intelligence, allows significant optimizations across the different stages of product life, paving the way toward a circular traceability and a systemic approach. Technologies like Industrial Internet of Things, Big Data Management, Digital Twin applied to urban contexts, and Artificial Intelligence are converging toward new operational and business architectures in the field of Waste Management: this panel wants to highlight these new approaches implemented from start-ups or innovative companies, with the decisive support from public Institutions and private financing, which contribute to accelerate the industrial readiness and the business sustainability of the innovations.
