Organized by: Ecomondo Scientific Technical Committee and Italian Geotechnical Association – Associazione Geotecnica Italiana (AGI)

In the last decades, specific focus on safety of river embankments and related investments on fluvial defense interventions have been relatively limited and virtually no national regulations nor technical guidelines have been released with the aim of achieving a suitable performance level. However, the ever changing climate conditions, the constant urbanization process and the concentration of population and productive activities in risk-prone areas have produced in the recent years an increasing rate of flooding phenomena and related damages.

The workshop aims at focusing the main geotechnical aspects closely connected to the various potential collapse mechanisms of river embankments and to the related stability issues and at providing a suitable discussion forum on current criticalities for the maintenance and management of existing dikes and on intervention priorities for mitigating the associated hydraulic risk.
