Organized by: Ecomondo Scientific Technical Committee, TNEC, ISPRA, GNRAC

Issues covered: Governance: the Coast Observatory; Governance: the application of the D.M. 173/2016; Sands and sediments as a strategic resource; Innovative approaches and technologies; Interactions with other uses of the sea and the coast; Climate scenarios.

The importance of the sediment resource for the defense of the coasts from erosion and from the effects of climate change has increasingly taken on a strategic value in the last years, especially with regard to the Mediterranean, an area of very high value of tourism, production, environmental and cultural heritage and with still great potential for growth. The management of sediment resources entails the need for specific protection policies, for identifying and characterizing the sources and the strategic reservoirs, as envisaged by the “Eurosion” recommendations, by the policies of the “Bologna Charter” and its Joint Action Plan, by the indications of the “National Guidelines on Coastal Erosion”. A differentiation of the sources raises the need to identify adequate management, regulatory and authorization systems to favor the sustainable use of the various resources in a complementary and synergistic way for the purposes of coastal management and protection, along with the principles of the ICZM Protocol in the Mediterranean.

The Conference wants to present on the one hand the updating of the work on the theme of sediments resource carried out within the National Board on Coastal Erosion (and the National Observatory being set up), on the estimation of availability from different sources, technical aspects and new technologies for their management, environmental and regulatory aspects. On the other hand, it wants to contribute to taking stock of the problems, on the part of public and private subjects, with regards to the application aspects and possible improvements to the current regulations, DM 173/2016, in implementation of Legislative Decree 152/2006 art. 109, in function of actions as most effective as possible of management and use of the various resources for the purposes of defense of the coasts, management of ports and waterways, for the Blue Growth, a sustainable growth combined with the objectives of territorial safety and protection of the coastal environment.
