The EU project “Industrial Feather Waste Valorisation for Sustainable KeRatin-based Materials” KaRMA2020 will organize an Innovation Workshop aiming at sharing the good practices for the valorisation of feather waste from poultry industry into a large array of bio-based products, such as biodegradable packaging, fertilisers, flame retardant composites and technical coatings.
Poultry industry generates huge amounts of waste each year. Only in the European Union 13.1 million tons of poultry meat are produced for year, with an estimated generation of 3.1 million tons of feather waste. This waste is simply disposed in landfills, incinerated, or a minor part converted into low nutritional value animal food, becoming a problematic for the future.
During the workshop, representatives from KaRMA2020 will interact with the attendees to explain how is possible to exploit at industrial level such underutilized feather waste for the production of valuable raw material to develop products for cross-sectorial applications, such as hydrolysed keratin, bioplastics, flame retardant coatings, spun bonded non-wovens, fertilisers and thermoset biobased resins.
