The crises in the world scenario oblige Europe to give a strong acceleration for reducing external dependence in the supply of energy and material resources. This challenge, which is both economic, environmental and geopolitical, requires us to look at the strategic role of waste management with renewed pragmatism, with particular reference to its important contribution to the achievement of the targets on self-sufficiency, decarbonisation, energy transition and efficient and circular use of resources. The conference will illustrate the most recent analyses conducted at European and national level about the contribution that a full development of waste management can give to the circular use of materials and energy, and the related economic and environmental benefits. In the subsequent round table, institutions (European and national) and representatives of the waste management industry will be asked to discuss the recipes needed to face the new challenges.
