Climate change is a topical issue and the landslide risk mitigation has become crucial for next generations. The Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development of United Nations also adds an old-new challenge: how to combine the land use with the preservation of natural resources and the prevention of disasters. Among the most widespread and often severe hazards, fast landslides (debris flows, debris avalanches, debris floods, etc) is the class characterized by the largest destructive potential, involving huge soil/rock masses, travelling very fast and even along gently inclined slopes.

This conference deals with the reduction of the risk posed by fast landslides in a modern framework of optimizing structural efficiency and reducing both construction costs and environmental impact. Examples of structures (reinforced embankments, filtering barriers, permeable racks, flexible nets, etc) employed to either stop or deviate the flowing masses will be considered. The approaches and methods nowadays available for design will be illustrated. The main focus of the conference will be on: (i) the reliable assessment of the input data, which is crucial for the correct choice of the structure, its positioning and for the specific design; (ii) the adequate analysis of the dynamic interaction between flowing mass and protection structure.
