The challenges of the revised Urban WasteWater Treatment Directive

The revised draft of the UWWTD introduced highly challenging objectives and targets which should finally results in new obligations to better control pollution related to urban runoff and stormwater management, impose stricter standards for nutrient removal and require advanced, quaternary, treatment for the removal of micropollutants (together with a system of extended producer responsibility targeting pharmaceuticals and cosmetics, considered the most abundant emerging pollutants). To align the directive with the Green Deal's ambitions, an energy neutrality obligation would be introduced for wastewater treatment plants, together with appropriate sludge management (i.e biogas production) enhancing circularity. In this context, even the difference between discharge- and reuse-oriented wastewater treatment systems might be less relevant. Finally, impacts on sewage sludge quality and fate can be also expected, which has to be considered for the sewage sludge directive revision. This workshop will focus on these topics, with different thematic sessions on micropollutants, energy neutrality, and water reuse.
