In a context of water resources scarcity in Mediterranean basin and beyond, the interface between sea- and inland-water has become more and more critical and strategic to provide safe fit-for-purpose water resources that should be sustainable from economic and environmental point of view, for example considering the water-energy nexus and the brine management. Seawater intrusion in coastal aquifers is negatively affecting groundwater quality and increasing water stress in highly populated and productive areas. A risk-based approach is needed to manage the land to sea interface concerning the bathing water quality, where safety planning should be consolidated and applied based on cross-sectoral partnerships.
