End-of-life tire (ELT) recycling between criticalities and opportunities

The sector of ELTs treatment and recycling is at a turning point: continuing, with the support of the legislator and all the players in the chain, to focus on material recovery, as supported by the numerous investments made to guarantee increasingly higher treatment levels, or going towards energy recovery, in contrast with the hierarchy of waste management and the inclusion of natural rubber in the list of critical raw materials. Indeed, in the last period, the sector has been continually affected by political initiatives (microplastic restriction, PAH presence survey) that hind the ELT recycling process, leading to a significant contraction of the outlet markets for the materials obtained. Last but not least, in order of importance, the problem due to the restrictions on the application of Granular Vulcanised Rubber, as defined in nataional regulation with the End of Waste criteria for ELTs (Decree 78/2020).

The conference aims to discuss, with the presence of representatives of the supply chain, policy makers and institutions, the possible tools to transform this context into an opportunity and increase the recovery of material from ELTs, in line with the principles of the circular economy.
