Ecomondo Mexico: a global connection for the circular economy

Ecomondo Mexico: a global connection for the circular economy

The circular economy is redefining global production and consumption paradigms, promoting sustainability and innovation. Within this framework, Ecomondo has established itself as the leading platform for promoting the green economy in Italy and Europe.

With its expansion into Latin America through Ecomondo Mexico, Ecomondo aims to replicate its success by adapting to the specific needs of the Mexican and Latin American markets.
We discuss this topic with Alessandra Astolfi, Global Exhibition Director Green & Technology, and Fabio Filipponi, International and Special Projects Manager.

Why did Ecomondo choose Mexico as a target market for expansion?
AA: <<Several factors influenced this decision. On one hand, demographic and socio-cultural studies and indicators played a role; on the other, economic indicators were key. Specifically, Mexico, with its growing population and rapid urbanization, is facing significant environmental challenges. Waste management, water scarcity, and the need for sustainable infrastructure are among the country’s primary concerns.>>

This is a very ambitious project for Ecomondo.
AA: <<Yes, Ecomondo is an ambitious project, constantly evolving. It was born in Italy from a brilliant intuition and has now become an international benchmark for the circular economy and ecological transition. In order to grow, it needs to expand abroad with localized events, creating a bridge between European technologies and the needs of the Latin American market.>>

Fabio, can you highlight key aspects of the Mexican event?
FF: <<Ecomondo Mexico, scheduled from March 5 to 7, 2025, at Expo Guadalajara, will cover several key sectors:

  • Waste Management and Circular Economy: Solutions for urban, industrial, and hazardous waste management, including recycling and e-waste treatment.
  • Bioenergy: Technologies for energy production from biomass, biofuels, and biotechnological processes.
  • Water Management and Treatment: Systems for wastewater treatment, water infrastructure, and sustainable water resource solutions.
  • Sustainable Cities: Initiatives for sustainable governance, electric mobility, green buildings, and climate-resilient infrastructure.

Beyond the exhibition, is there also a conference program?
FF: <<Exactly. The Ecomondo México program will include thematic conferences on topics such as composting, water treatment, and public policies for sustainability. These sessions will be led by industry experts, including members of the Italo-Mexican Technical-Scientific Committee, ensuring an integrated and international approach.>>

I read that key figures, such as Francesco Fatone, are part of the Mexican CTS. Beyond the conference program, can you tell us more about the Field Trip planned for this edition?
FF: <<The custom-organized Field Trip offers participants the opportunity to visit sites of environmental interest, providing a practical view of sustainable solutions implemented in the region. It extends the event beyond the exhibition space, strengthening the connection between the fair and the territory. For the 2025 edition, the guided visit will take place at Grupo VerdeMex.>>

What impact is the event having on European and particularly Italian companies?
FF: <<Interest from European companies, especially Italian ones, is growing. Thanks to collaborations with government institutions and industry associations, many companies see Ecomondo Mexico as a strategic platform to expand their presence in the Latin American market. The Italian Pavilion, organized by the ICE Agency, is a clear example of this.>>

What are the future prospects for Ecomondo México?
AA: <<The future is promising. We will continue to strengthen the dialogue between Europe and Latin America, promoting sustainability and technological innovation. Our goal is to establish Ecomondo México as a benchmark for environmental issues in the region.>>
