Rimini, 27th October 2023 . From ´A´ for resilient agriculture to ´W´ for waste, via the ´B´ for circular bio-economy and ´M´ for the Maelstrom Project for marine health, ´P´ for plastic and ´T´ for textiles. The calendar of events at Ecomondo 2023 contains the entire circularity alphabet. Balanced between scientific research and innovation, ´beacon´ conferences on the new priorities of the European Green Deal, the presence of institutions, from municipalities to the European Commission and case histories that companies will bring to Rimini, from 7th - 10th November for the 26th edition of Italian Exhibition Group´s event dedicated to the green and circular economy.

THE CALENDAR OF EVENTS: OVERVIEW
The calendar of conferences and seminars at Ecomondo 2023 will be divided into eight sections for a total of 70 events in more than 200 hours over the four days of the event. The calendar structure will see the circular and regenerative (bio)economy as the general perimeter, which will include themes regarding site and soil conservation and restoration, the water cycle, the Blue Economy, the historic role of waste as a resource with which Ecomondo began in 1997, as well as bioenergy and agroecology, environmental monitoring and control, innovation and policy, and will conclude with aspects linked to funding for green companies, training and communication. The message of Ecomondo 2023 is that soil and hydrosphere ecosystem regeneration must be complementary to the circular economy.
From quality and sustainable food production to meet an ever-greater global demand, to the recovery of secondary raw materials such as plastic or metals, the use of waste biomass for energy production, digital technologies for monitoring the ´state of health´ of the environment, and constant updates on regulations involving both public administrations and economic players as well as new opportunities to access funding for companies that focus on green development. A calendar of events compiled in collaboration with the show´s stakeholders under the direction of Ecomondo´s Technical-Scientific Committee chaired by Fabio Fava, Professor of Industrial and Environmental Biotechnology at Bologna University´s Faculty of Engineering.

WASTE AS A RESOURCE
The ´waste as a resource´ area, the event´s traditional focus, will occupy the most substantial part of Ecomondo 2023´s calendar of conferences and workshops, compiled with partners such as ISWA (International Solid Waste Association), Italian and foreign universities and business associations. Among the various events: ´Technological advancements in waste treatment and resource recovery´ (Tuesday 7th) to take stock of the continuing different approaches among European countries with respect to circular economy objectives; a gap that sees the average recycling percentage of 5 tonnes per capita that a European citizen produces each year stuck at 38%. Another topical issue is the availability of raw materials for the electronics industry. With ´Circular solutions for electronics and Hi-tech Industry´ (Tuesday 7th), in collaboration with the Erion consortium, the focus will be on strategies for the proper collection of electronic material in order to increase recycling. Moreover, Europe has set 2030 as the deadline for full recyclability of all packaging placed on the market and the recycling of more than half of plastic waste. With ´The national plastics strategy between criticalities and possibilities´ (Tuesday 7th), ISPRA, Unionplast, ANCI and Assorimap will look at the NRRP´s enabling strategies for plastics management. The NRRP will be discussed again (Wednesday 8th) during ´PNRR and the circular economy´ with the Ministry for the Environment and Energy Security, ISPRA and Confindustria. ´Meeting the circular economy challenge. Europe and Italy faced with the 2035 Objectives´ in collaboration with Utilitalia (Wednesday 8th), will ask questions on the so-called ´closing the loop´, i.e., the plant requirements for completing the circular economy in terms of the EU objectives with an overview of Italian cities and regions. Lastly, the many appointments will include ´Accelerate the Circular Transformation in Textile Industry´ in collaboration with LVMH Italia, (Wednesday 8th), which will demonstrate the state of the art on material recycling, durability and logistics in the fashion system´s luxury segment, where creating value involves a constant race towards process innovation.

CIRCULAR (BIO)ECONOMY
Alongside the XXV Conference on composting and anaerobic digestion, organised in collaboration with CIC and ISPRA, regenerative circular bioeconomy will be discussed (Wednesday 8th) at the event dedicated to ´Agrifood needs and opportunities in the frame of the new legislative Framework for Sustainable Food Systems (FSFS) and its international promotion´ organised by Confagricoltura, Federalimentare and Enea to take stock of the food labelling situation among various EU countries, the impact of the FSFS on the Italian agrifood system and the specific characteristics of the Mediterranean diet and its products. An executive from DG Sante (The Directorate General for Health and Food Safety) of the European Commission will also speak.
Circular bioeconomy, with a perspective on the bio-based industry, will also feature. With the ´Spring´ cluster (Wednesday 8th), Ecomondo will be presenting the industrial and scientific community with a ´regional´ approach to the topic that enhances value chains in their connection with territories: ´The biobased industry contributes to the implementation of the circular bioeconomy by building value chains that respect the environment and local communities´. In addition to the Emilia-Romagna Region, the German Land of North Rhine-Westphalia and the French region of Grand Est will also be bringing their case histories to Rimini; FAO, OECD and the EU Commission will also participate.

LAND AND SOIL MAINTENANCE AND RESTORATION
Ecomondo will host (Thursday 9th) the second edition of the ´States General of Soil Health´ in collaboration with Re Soil Foundation and JRC. The starting point will be the European Soil Health Law that the European Commission presented last July as part of the 2030 strategy for soil. The Head of Unit at DG Clima, the Director General of DG Envi and Vice Director General of DG Agri will be speaking. Floods and droughts are a global priority due to the danger they pose to both built-up and cultivated areas: regeneration and environmental and economic sustainability must go hand in hand. In cooperation with the Italian Geotechnical Association, the conference (Tuesday 7th) ´Innovative and sustainable technologies for mitigating natural hazards: landslides earthquakes and floods´ will discuss innovative construction methods and technologies for compatible assessment and mitigation with the environment: from embankment structures along the Po river basin, to the MOSE barrier and Houston Bay in Texas. The European Commission´s DG Agri, on the other hand, will be attending the conference (Wednesday 8th) organised with Turin Polytechnic, JRC and the EU Commissioner´s Office, entitled ´Earth observation and advanced technologies for making agriculture more resilient against extreme events in the water cycle: floods and droughts´, which will show how important ´water management´ and weather data are today for food security and agricultural resilience in the Mediterranean area.

WATER CYCLE AND THE BLUE ECONOMY
For its 26th edition, Ecomondo has enhanced its calendar of events dedicated to the water cycle and, more generally, to the blue economy. On the other hand, the European Union has set itself the mission, between now and 2030, to restore its ocean and waters ecosystems. ´The EU Mission Restore our Ocean and Waters by 2030: The Mediterranean Stakeholder community of actors´ (Tuesday 7th) is the event organised in synergy with BlueMissionMed CSA, BlueMed GSOs, CNR, Ecorys and Prep4 Blue. A central issue is combining the scientific objectives for restoring the hydrosphere with the engagement of citizens, innovators and companies operating in the blue economy segment in order to have a scalability of multi-level solutions all directed towards the same objective. The vice director general of DG Mare will be in Rimini to illustrate the operational methods. Plastics recovery in coastal areas is the subject of a vertical project of the 2030 mission known as ´Maelstrom´, whose first fruitful implementations from the North Adriatic to Portugal will be presented (Tuesday 7th): ´Sustainable technologies for marine litter removal and recycling: the experience of the H2020 MAELSTROM project´ with a speech by DG RTD (Directorate-General for Research and Innovation).
Since the blue economy infrastructures, from ports to tourism, are mainly located on coasts, mitigating the risk of climate change in these areas is a priority. GNRAC, ISPRA, Legambiente, Waterfrontlab, CPMR (Conference of Peripheral Maritime Regions), are therefore organising the conference ´The future of coasts and ports in a changing climate: needed actions and opportunities for a Sustainable Blue Economy´ (Tuesday 7th) with case studies from France and the Netherlands with the participation of DG Mare, who will also be on the panel (Wednesday 8th) devoted to ´Planning the Marine Space for a Sustainable Blue Economy in the Mediterranean´ organised by CNR, IUAV and CORILA.

SUSTAINABLE CITIES, INNOVATION, FUNDING, COMMUNICATION
Ecomondo is an ecological transition ecosystem. Alongside the traditional themes of waste or energy production from biomasses or the environmental monitoring of odour emissions, on which the Italian Exhibition Group event has been a pioneering platform for a quarter of a century, the 2023 calendar of events will also make room for innovation, especially digital, and public policies, funding opportunities for companies with green development plans and communication. The new entry of ´healthy cities´ (Wednesday 8th) is a topic that completes circularity, from the production of goods to the management of resources and urban ecosystems. The panel on ´City regeneration, circularity and health: needs and opportunities via national and EU case studies´ will also host DG Energy, an EU directorate.
Other topics include conferences on ´green bonds´, an opportunity to finance sustainable enterprises on which ItaSIF - Forum for Sustainable Finance - invites participants to keep their guard well up against the risks of greenwashing during an event on green bonds (Tuesday 7th).
Then, from the supply chain to the value chain, measuring the carbon footprint not only involves the entire logistics cycle, but also the whole product life cycle. Analysing the topic from a markedly business perspective will be the Sant´Anna School of Advanced Studies in Pisa (Thursday 9th) with ENEA and Global Compact Network Italia, during the workshop ´Measurement of carbon footprint of business and supply chain decarbonisation strategies´. To include a debate among opinion leaders, businesses and the world of information on the communication strategies adopted so far in Italy for the ecological transition and its reception in public opinion, Ecomondo and FERPI, the Italian Public Relations Federation, will be staging the Good Communication Forum (Friday 10th), which, starting with the United Nations 2030 Agenda, will propose an 18th goal concerning responsible communication. Lastly, ASVIS, in terms of training, will take 2023 as the European Year of Skills to outline the competences for the future (Friday 10th), essential for implementing the green transition and the new jobs of tomorrow that can only be imagined with the tools of a world that was not green or was not green enough.
