Rimini, 27th October 2023 . Probes that exploit cosmic rays to locate underground water leaks, waste bins that sort waste with Artificial Intelligence, technologies for burning waste without flames: these are just some of the innovative ideas of the 20 start-ups and scale-ups that Ecomondo will be presenting to the market from 7th to 10th November at Rimini Expo Centre. Italian Exhibition Group´s leading event for circular economy technologies in the Mediterranean basin is further promoting the Start Up & Scale Up Innovation area, located in the Expo Centre´s East entrance for this edition, to discover Italy´s most innovative circular start-ups from Lombardy to Apulia, from Veneto to Tuscany, passing through Emilia-Romagna, Lazio, Basilicata, Campania and Abruzzo.

INNOVATION TO REDUCE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT
Research and innovation to improve the efficiency of existing technologies, reduce the impact on the environment and transform waste into value. This is the common goal of the start-ups that IEG, together with ITA (Italian Trade Agency), the Emilia-Romagna regional agency ART-ER (Attractiveness Research Territory) and Confindustria´s MAI Foundation in collaboration with ANGI (National Association of Young Innovators) wanted to host at Ecomondo 2023: today´s innovators as key figures in the development of tomorrow´s green technologies.

RECYCLING
Several solutions involve the recycling, especially the management of industrial processing waste. Among these are 9-Tech from Eraclea (Venice), which studies and creates prototypes to recover strategic materials from electronic waste and, in particular, to recycle end-of-life photovoltaic panels; Mixcycling from Breganze (Vicenza), whose technology ennobles waste from industrial processing and makes it usable again by producing new bioplastic polymers containing 10 to 70% natural fibre; Neuravision from Matera, whose innovative patented system enables the automatic sorting of electronic waste based on the content of precious metals (gold, silver, platinum, palladium, copper) within them; Re Open from Milan, a service platform dedicated to waste management in the energy sector that carries out research and development projects for the recovery of glass, cellulose acetate, materials from the fashion industry and lithium batteries.

WASTE
Another five start-ups are also waste sector related: Egreenbox from Rotonda (Potenza), which makes smart machines for collecting, recycling and reusing secondary raw materials, including a ´plastic-eating´ eco-compactor that can be used via QR-Code and web app; Flugantia from Naples, which creates IoT solutions to predict the filling level of waste containers, offering an estimate of the date when they will have reached their maximum capacity in order to plan pickup times; Komposta from Bellante (Teramo), which produces electromechanical composters with digitized and customizable management; Ganiga Innovation from Bientina (Pisa), which makes a trash bin that automatically sorts waste using Artificial Intelligence and moves it via compressed air; OXOCO from Bari, whose technology, operating under pressure at very high temperature in an oxygen atmosphere, burns waste without flame and creates the first alternative to traditional incinerators and landfill disposal.

DECARBONIZATION
In the area of emission reduction and energy efficiency, Hyba from Lecce has developed a system of exchangeable batteries, which can also be used as an energy storage unit to power bicycles, scooters, microcars, small buses, marine engines, machinery, equipment and other industrial applications. Rome-based Ecosostenibile.eu operates in the field of transition to a low-carbon economy, offering companies an ´ESG platform´ that measures sustainability and the carbon footprint, automating the collection of information through APIs and processing any certifiable third-party reporting. Lastly, Preinvel from Grottaglie (Taranto), has developed an extremely efficient, low-power industrial filtering system that separates filtered dust according to its physical characteristics, directing it into different disposal routes and reusing those made up of materials that are still useful.

WATER
The ´water´ theme links the start-ups Sea The Change from Venice, which develops sustainability strategies based on protecting marine ecosystems; Finapp from Montegrotto Terme (Padua), which, by using patented probes that exploit cosmic rays, is able to locate leaks in the water supply network, covering up to 150 km of pipes per day in urban centres; and SaferPlaces from Rimini, whose technology is able to provide crucial and timely information about the risk of flooding at low cost by creating a ´digital twin´ of the urban environment.

FARMING, POLYMERS, ENERGY EFFICIENCY AND BIODIVERSITY
Further start-ups operate in the field of business consultancy to identify solutions aimed at sustainability: Laprima Green Solutions from Isola Vicentina (Vicenza), offers companies operating in the plastics sector innovative solutions, strategies and consulting for the management, recovery, recycling and ennobling of complex polymers, guaranteeing supervision over the life cycle of each material; K-INN TECH, a spin-off of Padua University, proposes and develops experimental studies and technical sustainability consulting modelling for companies in the chemical, energy and environmental sectors; Acquaponic Design, a spin-off of Bologna University, designs and builds above-ground cultivation systems, offering training courses in aquaponics, hydroponics, vertical farming and container growing. Two Milanese start-ups are working on flora, fauna and biodiversity solutions: Abit, which develops software that detects data to learn about soil characteristics and improve the sustainability of agricultural activity, and 3Bee, which develops 4.0 beehives to monitor the well-being of bees, automatic fauna counting systems that, thanks to artificial intelligence, recognize the type of animal (pollinating insects in particular) and neural network systems for plant biodiversity analysis.

AWARDS FOR START-UPS WITH THE HIGHEST INNOVATION POTENTIAL AND ´GREEN INNOVATORS´
Once again this year, three Italian startups at Ecomondo committed to combating climate change will be awarded with the aim of selecting the most innovative, effective and promising projects in terms of their contribution to achieving Italy´s climate neutrality. The three startups with the highest innovative potential will be selected by an evaluation committee specifically set up for the purpose.
Moreover, for the first time, Ecomondo is organizing an award for green innovators in memory of IEG president Lorenzo Cagnoni, who, back in 1997, had the far-sighted idea of organising an event dedicated to the circular economy. The award will be given to the most innovative projects among exhibitors that contribute to the transition to a circular and sustainable economy. The three most innovative projects, chosen by an evaluation committee, will be awarded during Ecomondo on Thursday, November 9th at 10 am in the Innovation Arena (South Hall).
