Bernd Manfred Gawlik
Dr. Bernd Manfred Gawlik is Scientific Project Manager at the European Commission's in-house Science and Knowledge Service, the Joint Research Centre, where he coordinates the JRC Task Force on Water Quality. He was recruited by the European Commission in 1999 and holds an Engineer degree from the French Higher Institute for Industrial Chemistry and a Ph.D. on Natural Sciences from Technical University of Munich.
In the past two decades he has been working an all major European environmental directives involving chemical monitoring and compounds and pollutants of emerging concern such as pharmaceuticals antimicrobial agents and other veterinary medicinal products. He is a closely involved in the Common Implementation Strategy of the Water Framework Directive, umbrella under which he co-drafted the Water Reuse Regulation.
Bernd, who closely and equally interacts with all actors around “water”, is author/co-author of more than 100 scientific paper, books and reports of the European Commission. His recent focus of work is on the Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystem Nexus, where he contributes to the development of a Spatial Assessment of a Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystem NEXUS in the Mediterranean in close collaboration with the Union for the Mediterranean and the Global Water Partnership of the Mediterranean.
Based on his background in chemical pollutants he is also leading the JRC contribution to the UN Environment's World Water Quality Alliance and GEMS Water.
