Giorgio Bertanza
Graduated in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Brescia in 1990, he started his research activity in the field of Sanitary-Environmental Engineering at the University of Pavia, as fellowship owner. In 1996 he was assigned of the Ph. D. in Sanitary Engineering at the Technical University of Milan. His research activity was continued at the Engineering Faculty of the University of Brescia with a two months period research stage at the Institut für Thermische Verfahrenstechnik of the University of Clausthal (D). At present, he is Full Professor in Sanitary-Environmental Engineering (since march 2005) at the Department of Civil, Environmental, Architectural Engineering and Mathematics of the University of Brescia, after being researcher (1998-2001) and Associate Professor (2001-2005).
His teaching activity concerns several topics: water, wastewater, solid waste treatment plants management and design. Lectures have been given at different University courses (Brescia, Pavia, Mantua) as well as within about 70 specilisation courses in Italy and abroad. He was tutor or co-tutor of about 200 university degree theses and tutor of 6 Ph. D. theses.
Reserch activity (as a member of research groups or as scientific responsible of project financed with national or european funds) deals mainly with the following topics: techno-economic and environmental assessment of water and waste management systems, presence and removal of trace pollutants in water and wastewater, technologies for upgrading/optimization of Waste Water Treatment Plants (W.W.T.P.), performance testing and operation criteria of W.W.T.P., landfill leachate and industrial wastewater treatment, solid waste recycling, treatment and disposal. Prof. Bertanza is author or co-author of about 300 scientific works (published on national or international journals, conference proceedings, books etc.: 70 are indicized by Scopus) and participated (as author of accepted papers) at about 130 national and internatinal conferences. Prof. Bertanza is co-inventor of 7 patents.
Prof. Bertanza is Secretary of Specialist Group on AOPs (Advanced Oxidation Processes) within IWA (International Water Association); furthermore, he is member of the International Programme Committee of specialised international conferences and is Associate Editor of Water Science and Technology for the topic Advanced Chemical Oxidation. He is vice-Director of his Department and Responsible for the Didactic acrivity.
