General Secretary of the Po River District Authority and University of Ferrara

Alessandro Bratti was born in Ferrara on May 4, 1958. Graduated with honors in Agricultural Sciences from the University of Bologna, specialist in Phytopathology, PHD in Agricultural Entomology, he has carried out research activities in Italy (University of Bologna) and abroad (U.S.D.A in Weslaco, Texas). Since November 2001 he has been a Researcher at the University of Ferrara, where he teaches “Sustainable Development and Environmental Accounting”.
 

  • In 1994 he was appointed Councillor of the City of Ferrara, first with responsibility for Sports, Environment and Decentralization, then from 1999 until 2006 with responsibility for Environment and Mobility. During this period the city of Ferrara, the only one in Italy, was awarded the European Sustainable Cities Award by the European Commission.
     
  •  In 1999 he was among the founders of the Local Agenda 21 Coordination. In February 2003 he became its President, participating in many initiatives including, in 2002, the World Summit in Johannesburg.
     
  •  In February 2006 he was called to serve as General Director of ARPA Emilia-Romagna.
     
  •  From April 2008 to November 2017 he served two parliamentary terms in the Chamber of Deputies. A member of the Environment and Territory Commission, from September 9, 2014 to November 22, 2017 he chaired the Bicameral Commission of Inquiry on illegal activities related to the waste cycle.
     
  • In December 2017, he was appointed General Director of ISPRA. He is a member of the coordination committee of the Italy-Meteo Agency and since December 2018 has been Vice President of the European Environment Agency.


Many national and international working groups and commissions where he has been a member: the Study Committee for the revision of Legislative Decree 152, the Commission for Environmental Accounting of the Ministry of Economy and Finance. He was a representative of the AICCRE Italian Association of European Municipalities, Provinces and Regions in the Environment and Sustainable Development Commission of the CEMR (Council of European Municipalities and Regions) and a member of the ANCI Environment Commission.

He has written several books on sustainability issues, including “Managing the Commons” and “Governance and Conflicts at the Local Scale. From and Beyond the Agenda 21 Experience” both published by Edizioni Ambiente. He has published more than 60 articles in national and international journals.

A lifelong player and volleyball enthusiast, he is currently Vice President of 4TORRI 1947.
