He heads the Water Quality and Health Department of the Istituto Superiore di Sanità dealing with the study of human health aspects and health risks associated with access to and quality of water, in relation to the origin of water resources, their interactions with climate and environmental and anthropogenic variables, to the hygiene of processes, treatments, facilities, and materials in contact with water, to the uses and reuses of water (for human consumption, recreational and bathing, livestock, irrigation, and food), and to the various direct and indirect exposure pathways for humans.

Author of International Guidelines under WHO, WHO/UNECE, EC Expert Groups for drinking and bathing water, water reuse, National Representative under the WHO/UNECE Water and Health Protocol and WHO/JMP program; leader of the Protocol's Water Systems Resilience to Climate Change Task Force, National Representative for health aspects in European Directives and Regulations (Human Water Quality Directive, Bathing Water Quality, Risk Analysis on Water Reuse).  

National expert for the Superior Health Council for water safety and quality, including thermal and natural mineral waters, emerging contaminants, emerging processes and treatments, e.g., domestic treatments, desalination.

Project leader, Component Manager and key-expert in more than 30 technical assistance and institutional twinning projects (EC Phare Twinning Projects, TAIEX ): Turkey, Poland, Estonia, Egypt, Romania, Kosovo*, Bulgaria, Georgia, Vietnam, Kosovo, Armenia, Israel, Tunisia, Serbia, Albania.

Project manager for > 60 research projects (2004-) funded by the Italian Ministry of Health, Regional Health Authorities, Regional Authorities, hydro-power operators. Scientific support presiding over interventions in prevention and response in environmental and health emergency circumstances with respect to contamination of water resources and integrated water cycle.
